News

Scoop Magazine, Summer 2009 50th Edition, has listed The Taming of the Shrew as the Number 2 Things You Must Not Miss this Summer!

The editorial reads "Flares, go-go boots and Shakespeare?  The Taming of the Shrew  gets the swinging 1960's treatment in this colourful adaptation by new company Shakespeare WA.  Taking up the mantle of 'Shakespeare in the Park', Director Paige Newmark is determined to bring some really first-class performances to this really beautiful venue under the stars in Kings Park and Botanic Gardens.  With a picnic and a bottle of wine, what better way to enjoy some of the greatest plays ever written?"

Our 2010 SHREW SEASON'S best...........

Shakespeare WA's The Taming of the Shrew: The cast had some of last year's favourite's including the amazing Sam Longley playing Grumio, Best Newcomer award winner Will O'Mahony as Tranio, and Perth's sexiest man Glenn Hall as Hortensio.  David Meadows joined Shakespeare WA and pitted the taming abilities of Petrucchio against Anna Brockway's fiesty and shrewish Katherina.  Lucy Cooke as the younger more eligible sister Bianca tempted an array of suitors, including Stephen Lee as Gremio.  Angelique Malcolm rejoined the company as the Widow having played Katherina for us last time at the Quarry Amphitheatre, whilst the senior parts were played by Perth Theatre stalwarts James Hagan as Baptista, Jay Walsh as the Merchant, and Greg McNeill as Vincentio and Nick Candy played Lucentio.

CONTRACT GIVEN FOR FIVE SEASONS!

Shakespeare WA won the contract to produce Shakespeare in Perth's Kings Park for five seasons, starting in January 2010.  After a long and grueling bidding process, we emerged triumphant.! This means we could prepare for the long term and have implemented a five year strategic plan, including developing partnerships to support our film festival, our schools and touring programmes, as well as our Foundation Stone - Shakespeare productions in the Park.

The company relaunched with The Taming of the Shrew, which had not been seen in Kings Park for over a decade.  Paige Newmark directed a 1960's rock-and-roll production that turned out to be every bit as entertaining as last seasons' Dream.
